Lemosho Route 7 days mount Kilimanjaro summit trek

  • Access To The Trail Begins With A Long Drive From Moshi Or Arusha To Londorossi Gate. This Can Take Three To Four Hours. Londorossi Gate Is Located In The Western Base Of The Mountain.

The Lemosho route covers approximately 70 km/ 42 miles from gate to gate and involves an elevation gain of about 16,000 to 17,000 feet. The journey starts in a lush, fertile rainforest, which is the first ecological zone you encounter when trekking up Kilimanjaro.

As you proceed, you will pass through four ecological zones. The route takes you up and across the Shira Plateau, which used to be Kilimanjaro’s third peak before it collapsed.

Then, you will make your way north to Moir Hut, which provides a great acclimatization day due to the short hikes that can be done in the nearby Lent Hills.

Next, you will climb high up and over Lava Tower before dropping into Barranco Valley, which is one of the most beautiful areas on the entire trail. You will climb the intimidating Barranco Wall and circle along the southern circuit to Karanga and high camp Barafu Hut.

The summit attempt is made from Barafu in the early morning, often during the full moon. This is the coldest, windiest section of your adventure. However, once the sun comes up, most of your extra layers can be taken off. After the summit, the descent follows the Mweka trail.

The Lemosho route is designed for physically fit people with some hiking experience, but many clients still tackle the route as their first real backpacking experience and do very well. Therefore, do not be intimidated by this tail. If it appeals to you, we encourage you to climb Kilimanjaro on the route.

However, the trek from Barranco to Barafu, followed by the summit day, remains unchanged from the six-day Lemosho variation. This schedule is still very challenging, although the extra day on the mountain on the seven-day route will help climbers deal with the exhausting itinerary better than those who opted for the six-day route.

    - Duration: 7 – 8 days.
    - Difficulty: Medium.
    - Scenery: Excellent.
    - Traffic: Medium.

    Trekking Costs:
Lemosho route  7 days 6 nights $2,750 per person.
Solo climber add-on charge of $320.
    Single supplement charge $280.

    - Distance: 6 km
    - Hiking Time:3-4 hours
    - Habitat: Rain Forest

We will leave Moshi and head towards Londorossi Gate, which is approximately a 4-hour drive.

At the gate, you will complete the entry formalities before continuing your journey to the Lemosho trailhead, which takes an hour to reach.

Once we arrive at the trailhead, we will have lunch before starting the trek through the untouched forest that leads to the first campsite.

DAY 2: FOREST CAMP TO SHIRA CAMP 1

    - Elevation (ft): 9,500ft to 11,500ft
    - Distance: 8 km
    - Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
    - Habitat: Moorland

As we walk along the trail that leads out of the forest, we come across a savannah filled with tall grass, heather, and volcanic rocks that are covered in lichen beards.

As we slowly climb up the rolling hills and cross several streams, we eventually reach the Shira Ridge before descending towards the Shira 1 campsite.

The view of Kibo from the plateau is breathtaking.

    - Habitat: Moorland.

We will spend a whole day exploring the Shira plateau.

The walk towards Kibo's glaciated peak is an easy one and takes us eastwards, across the plateau which leads to Shira 2 camp located on moorland meadows by a stream.

Afterward, we proceed to Moir Hut, a site that is not frequently used and is located at the base of Lent Hills.

There are many walks available on Lent Hills, which makes this an excellent opportunity for acclimatization. Shira is one of the highest plateaus on earth.

DAY 4: MOIR HUT TO LAVA TOWER TO BARRANCO CAMP.

    - Elevation (ft): 13,800ft to 13,000ft

Afterward, we'll proceed towards Arrow Glacier at 16,000ft, before descending to Barranco Hut at 13,000ft to rest and spend the night.

This day is important for acclimatization, and preparing our bodies for the summit.

DAY 5: BARRANCO CAMP TO KARANGA CAMP TO BARAFU CAMP.

    - Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent
    - Habitat: Arctic.

We begin our ascent to the summit between Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers very early in the morning, around midnight to 2 a.m.

At Stella Point, located at 18,600 ft, we take a short rest and enjoy the breathtaking sunrise.

Uhuru Peak is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the entire continent of Africa.

After taking photos and celebrating, we descend straight down to the Mweka Hut campsite with a stop at Barafu for lunch.

Mweka Camp is located in the upper forest where mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon.

In the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain before a well-earned sleep.

DAY 7: MWEKA CAMP TO MOSHI.

    - Elevation (ft): 10,000ft to 5,400ft
    - Distance: 10 km
    - Hiking Time: 3-4 hours

After having breakfast, you and your crew have a heartfelt ceremony of appreciation and team bonding.

When it is time to say goodbye, you continue descending to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates.

The weather is now warmer, and the terrain is wet, muddy, and steep.

We highly recommend Gaiters and trekking poles for this part of the journey.

After arriving at the gate, a vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to take you back to your hotel in Moshi.

The drive will take about 30 minutes. Once you arrive, you can finally enjoy a long overdue hot shower, dinner, and celebrations!

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU TRAVEL
Your travel Manager usually handles most of your planning and preparation bit, but apparently, you are personally advised to know that there are a few peculiar things you must address to ensure your comfort, safety, and peace of mind. Please read through to identify the completeness of your checklist to avoid hiccups in your trip.

    VISA & PASSPORT

Find out the countries you are traveling to if they require a Visa; if so, do you have it ready? Also, make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates.

Please click here for assistance in applying for a U.S. Passport and relevant processing services.

CLICK HERE FOR INFORMATION ABOUT PASSPORT AND VISA REQUIREMENTS.

    Visa:
Most visas are best obtained before traveling to your destination. Therefore, you should make prior arrangements with the appropriate foreign consular representative to allow enough time between processing and the travel date.

Entry Requirements for U.S. Passport Holders.
For details on various countries based on the U.S. State Department information, please check with the consular office of the countries you plan to visit and/or click here.

Double Entry and Multiple Entry Visas.
Some itineraries might involve entering a country, leaving, and then later re-entering the same country. In such a case, you will require a double-entry or multiple-entry visa.
When contacting a foreign consular representative, make sure to describe your itinerary clearly.

    Types of Visa
There are two types of visas, single entry, and East Africa Tourist Visa. Please find your tour below to ensure you purchase the correct one.

    Single Entry eVisa:
The eVisa costs $51 and must be obtained in advance. You will await approval via email (approx. 2 days), then download and print the eVisa to be presented upon entry to Kenya. The eVisa is valid for 3 months before travel.

    East Africa Tourist Visa:
The East Africa Tourist Visa costs $101 and must be obtained in advance. This will allow travelers to enter Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda multiple times.
You will await approval via email (approx. 2 days), then download and print the eVisa to be presented upon entry to Kenya. The eVisa is valid for 3 months before travel.

Please note:  The East Africa Tourist Visa can be used as a multi-entry visa for Kenya.

    FLIGHT BOOKING

Flight Preparation to Kenya from the USA.
Flights from New York City to Nairobi: JFK to NBO. The fastest direct flight from New York City to Nairobi takes 14 hours and 20 minutes.
The flight distance between New York City and Nairobi is 7,351 miles.

However, several airlines offer itineraries to Kenya, and their bookings are all available online for your convenience. Your discretion in choosing which to use is allowed.

Always ensure that you reconfirm the Flight.

    Luggage & Packing
Checked bags are typically limited to a total dimension of 62 inches by adding length + width + height (example: 26"+26"+10" = 62”) and a maximum weight of 50 lbs (23kg).

    Carry on Luggage.
We urge you to pack the items you would be without if your checked bags were lost in your carry-on bag. Prescription medications, eyeglasses, a change of clothes, a mobile phone and charger, valuables (including jewelry and cash), a passport, keys, insurance cards, and local contact information are a few things to remember.

Additionally, we advise you to pack a change of clothing in your carry-on suitcase if your luggage is delayed or misplaced.

    DESTINATION INFORMATION

    Arrive On Time.

You should plan to check in at least three hours before the scheduled departure time for international flights and two hours prior to the scheduled departure time for domestic flights due to additional security checks.

    Connecting Passengers.
Connecting passengers from other US locations should check their bags all the way to their final destination. Some airlines do not permit the "interlining" of checked bags; each destination flight's luggage is checked separately.

    Destination Landing and Eventual Departure.
Please finish all immigration procedures upon arrival and retrieve your bags. Check your voucher for detailed instructions if your program involves airport arrival shuttles, as they differ depending on the destination.

    Transfer.
We kindly suggest that you give our representative 30 minutes extra time from the time of your booked transfer due to local traffic and other unavoidable situations.
Transfers to and from the airport are included. You shouldn't worry about being late for your tour because such potential delays are considered when booking transfers.

    During Game Safaris.

Ensure to pack your items in a soft-sided duffel bag and pack lightly due to the constrained space in safari vehicles. Using conventional luggage with rigid frames or hard plastic panels is not recommended.

Please be aware that there is an environmental prohibition on single-use plastic bags.

    YOUR TOUR INFORMATION.

    Tour Vehicles.
Expect to spend most of the time driving over roads that are often rough and bumpy in safari vehicles that are not air-conditioned.
Safari vehicles have high ground clearance and require agility to embark and disembark.

    Tour journey in Destination Country.
The number of participants on your trip may change as we accommodate visitors at various points along the schedule.
There are many early mornings. Only "bush toilets" are available during game drives.

    Overland Sightseeing.
There is a required seat rotation policy on our Customized Tour Vehicles, which your Tour Manager will coordinate to ensure that travelers on tour-guided safaris have a positive and equitable experience.

    Independent Activities.
The schedule might suggest things to do in your free time, but this is not a recommendation or an endorsement of any particular vendor.
Participation in such activities should only be decided upon voluntarily and carefully.

    Souvenir Shopping.
Most tourists like to bring back at least one memento from their travels.  Our Escorted itinerary has included a few shopping pit stops at suggested locations. These stops are intended to improve your experience by allowing you to inspect high-quality, locally-made goods that you might not be able to locate on your own.

    Gratuities.
Tipping is always an individual decision.
    Suggested Tipping: Kenya
Safari Driver/Guide: US $10 per person per day
Hotel porters and wait staff: At your discretion.

    ABOUT ACCOMMODATION & MONEY

    About Your Accommodations.
Each hotel is chosen carefully, considering its overall quality, location, cost, food, service, and cleanliness. Standard twin-bedded (two single beds) rooms with private bathrooms are available in every room. Many accommodations are built in the traditional local style and have no air-conditioning. Some of our tours require walking or stairs between tents. During this tour, you may come close to wild animals whose actions can be unpredictable.

Unless otherwise specified, choosing a room is always completely up to the hotel's management on a run-of-house basis.

    Electricity in Safari Camps.
Some camps and lodges rely on generators to supply electricity, which may not always be available. Travelers using power-dependent devices must inform the travel manager in advance so that arrangements can be made to keep them plugged in through the night.

    Electricity Specification
Please note: The U.S. uses 120 volts, and you can purchase a converter and transformer at most hardware stores for your 120V appliances.
Kenya - The voltage used is 220/240 volts, 3-pin square (UK standard)
Tanzania - The voltage used is 230 volts, 3-pin square (UK standard).

    Hotel Check-in/ Check-out.
Hotel check-in times are typically after 4:00 p.m., and check-out times are before midday. Hotels will typically let you store your stuff in their luggage room if you plan on arriving early or leaving late. If the hotel can check you in earlier or let you stay later, inquire at the front desk.

    Currency.
Before you leave your country, we advise that you get a small quantity of currency for the first country you'll be visiting. A smart strategy is to avoid carrying too much cash.
ATMs accept most ATM cards in many countries but only dispense in the local currency.

    Credit Cards
Even while credit cards are generally accepted, having local cash on hand is still a good idea. Let your credit card issuer know you will be traveling to prevent your card from being stopped for security concerns.
    ABOUT YOUR HEALTH

    Staying Healthy While Traveling
All travelers should familiarize themselves with local conditions, such as high altitude or required immunizations, which could affect their health. We recommend you consult with your personal healthcare provider, the Centers for Disease Control (www.cdc.gov), and/or the World Health Organization (http://www.who.int/en/) for their recommendations.

    Health Checks.
Visitors to Kenya must carry proof of yellow fever vaccination if traveling through or from a country with a risk of yellow fever and are encouraged to consult their healthcare providers regarding malaria prophylaxis.
Before signing up for this tour, we suggest you check with your healthcare provider.

    COMMUNICATION

    Mobile Phones
Mobile networks differ from country to country. We recommend you check with your provider to see if your wireless plan will work in the destination(s) you are visiting.
