Ngare Ndare Forest

  • Ngare Ndare Forest is a stunning indigenous forest that can be found at the foothills of Mount Kenya.

The forest is a hidden gem, boasting of its lush vegetation, azure pools that sparkle at the bottom of waterfalls, and 200-year-old trees that stretch high into the canopy to support a rich variety of bird and animal life.

Ngare Ndare Forest is not just a beautiful sight to behold, but also serves as a crucial corridor that links the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy to Mount Kenya.

For centuries, elephants have been using this corridor to migrate to Mount Kenya, and other wildlife have been using it to access the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.

However, in the 1980s, farmland on the southern side of the forest started to become more developed, leading to frequent clashes between farmers and elephants.

To reduce the fatal human-wildlife conflicts that arose, the forest was fenced off from the southern farmland in 1992.

Despite this initiative, it was only in 2004 that the Ngare Ndare Forest Trust was registered. It took another five years for a concession management agreement to be finalized with the Kenya Forest Service.

Today, the Ngare Ndare Forest Trust works tirelessly to preserve the forest and its unique ecosystem, allowing visitors to explore the forest while still protecting its natural beauty.
