Nairobi Arboretum owes its existence to the construction of Nairobi Uganda railways way back at the beginning of the 20th Century. Way then, Trains used wood-fired-engines and indeed huge amount of wood were required to keep the engine running. This thus called for a constant and huge supply of wood to sustain the operation.

Its was noted that many of the indigenous trees within 3 Km of the rail line were cut to supply the wood fuel. But they realized that there was quick depletion of these indigenous trees, which took a lot longer time to grow. This needed to be fixed and that's when they came up with planting soft and fast growing exotic trees.
