Mount Kenya National Park is 175 km north east of Nairobi. It offers a landscape of Mountain Rivers, forest, moorland rock and ice and crowned by glittering twin peaks of Batian and Nelion.
Mount Kenya National Park encompasses several landscapes, including alpine rivers, forests, and mountain slopes across its surface area of 715 km².
CLIMATE:
Because Mt. Kenya is more or less a vertical park, the climate changes as you ascend the mountain.
Expect big temperature changes between the day and night, with lows at 4oC/39oF.
Owing to its elevation, the mountain tends to be wet.
BEST TIME TO VISIT:
The best climbing is during the two dry seasons – January/February and August/September.
During the two rainy seasons, the trails are more difficult, and the visibility is poor.

WILDLIFE AT MOUNT KENYA NATIONAL PARK.
Mount Kenya National Park’s forests are home to an abundance of wildlife.
Among the larger mammals you are likely to encounter includes, elephants, Cape buffaloes, and leopards, and smaller mammals such as several species of antelope.
Black-and-white colobus monkeys also inhabit the forests.
Animals:
Several animals have evolved to thrive at high altitudes on Mount Kenya, includes the tree hyrax, white tailed mongoose, suni, black fronted duiker, mole rat, bushbucks, water buck and Elands.
Animals rarely seen include leopard, bongo, giant forest hog .
Birds:
The park is home to over 130 bird species, including sunbirds, starlings, and bearded vultures.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR VISITORS
- All visitors should enter the park with a qualified and certified guide. Guides and potters have identification cards issued by the park management.
- Disposable plastic water bottles are not allowed in the park.
- Guides and potters are not allowed to carry luggage that exceed 25KG. Weighing of luggage will be done at the gate on entry.
- All visitors are required to check in and out of the park, this is done by recording personal information in the entry and exit books
MOUNT KENYA NATIONAL PARK TREKKING.
- Mount Kenya has 3 peaks of varying levels of difficulty,
- Most adventurers scale the smallest peak, Point Lenana (4,985m), since it can be ascended without climbing.
- Only experienced climbers with advanced climbing equipment can climb Batian (5,199m) and Nelion (5,188m).
ROUTE:
- Main trekking route to Point Lenana is the Naro Moru route, and the ascent takes 3 days.
- The route begins at Naro Moru town on the western side of Mount Kenya, towards Mackinder’s Camp before merging with the Peak Circuit Path, a steep 10km ascent around Batian and Nelion.
- The Kenya Wildlife Service recommends that your ascent should take at least 3 nights to allow you to acclimatise.
- The best time to climb Mount Kenya is during the dry seasons, from June to October and January to March.
- The trails can get slippery during the wet seasons, so you should plan to avoid these months.

HOW TO GET THERE
- By Road: 175 Kms from Nairobi, the park can be reached on Nanyuki-Isiolo road via Sirimon Track or Nyeri-Nanyuki road near Naro Moru. The park is also reachable via Chogoria on the Embu - Meru road, about 150km north of Nairobi.

- By Air: The closest commercial airstrip to the park is at Nanyuki.
MOUNT KENYA NATIONAL PARK OPTIONS FOR YOUR KENYAN ADVENTURE.
Mount Kenya National Park is situated 175km northeast of Nairobi, where most itineraries starts.
Besides Mt. Trekking which normally takes 4–5-day for the standalone adventure, the park also offers some other Kenya’s most spectacular sceneries.
The second option will be to visit Mount Kenya’s slopes for a single day as part of a wider Kenyan adventure.
The most common choice to pair with the park are Lake Nakuru National Park, and the Maasai Mara as part of a 1–2-week itinerary.
