Diani Mombasa Kenya
Located at the southern end of Kenya’s Diani Beach coastline, Kinondo Kwetu is a secluded, Swedish-owned, all-inclusive luxury boutique hotel set among baobabs and palm trees on the near-private Galu beach overlooking the Indian Ocean.
This modest resort style hotel is on the quiet Galu Beach – a stretch of beach south of the main Diani Beach area.
It first opened in December 1991 and since then has remained a reliable, very well-managed, good-value option with a two restaurants and several room types. There is a convenient, neighbouring water sports outlet.
A longstanding popular resort, The Sands At Nomad has a lovely location set in 26 acres of coastal forest.
Looking out onto Diani Beach, it has lots of Swahili style in its design and a variety of areas and restaurants to occupy your time.
This is a really pleasant, laid back and family friendly mid-range resort, of a smaller size than most and in keeping with its surroundings on the Indian Ocean coast. Its friendly team clearly take pride in high degree of service, making it an enjoyable place to stay. To some not so accustomed to Swahili style it may feel dated so it might not suit those who prefer western designs.
At Alfajiri Villas, it's all about privacy and exclusivity. This is your holiday, to do exactly as you wish.
Love child of Marika and Fabrizio Molinaro, Alfajiri Villas is a private domain on one of the most beautiful and popular beaches in East Africa. Built in the late 1990s, this is the most upmarket and boutique of the many properties along Diani Beach. Ahead of its time when it first opened, the set-up is still wowing visitors, including celebrity guests whose stays Fabrizio enjoys recounting to guests. It has yet to be equaled along the south coast.
AfroChic is a modern, boutique hotel, part of the Elewana Group that owns several lodges in Tanzania.
Occupying a large, modern house in modest grounds, it’s billed as an exclusive hotel with a ‘unique and eclectic’ style.
This is a European-flavoured, boutique hotel. We were expecting something more stylish and distinctive, with a real combination of African character and modern flair, but our impression was of a pleasant, luxury, beachfront guesthouse.
Tijara Beach is one of the smallest properties that we feature on Kenya’s cost.
Sat within five acres of beautifully manicured lawns and gardens overlooking the sea, Tijara Beach aims to offer luxury and exclusivity. There are a few non-motorized activities offered by the lodge, otherwise the aim of your stay here is to simply unwind.
There is no music, no entertainment or dancing here – just the sound of the ocean with a maximum of eight guests. That said, those who crave the odd bit of extra activity can seek it in Diani, and Tijara will help you to arrange it.
A fully staffed, private home towards the southern end of Tiwi Beach, south of Mombasa, House on the Beach (formerly Olerai Beach House) is a spacious and comfortable family beach house, opened to guests in 2011. Visitors have full and exclusive use of the house and grounds, and access straight onto the very quiet public beach.
The huge Swahili Beach resort opened at the beginning of 2012 in a very central position on Diani Beach, south of Mombasa. The 140 rooms, with Mediterranean-style exteriors and Swahili chic interiors, are in two-storey clusters around the landscaped grounds. The hotel’s beachfront is one of the narrower sections of Diani Beach and the sea covers it at high tide.
Far to the south of Diani Beach, where the coast consists of cliffs above the beach, Msambweni Beach House (confusingly renamed as "Villa MB" in 2022) looks out across the Indian Ocean. With only four rooms and three very private villas, it provides privacy and exclusivity, with a high level of service, and all in a spectacular setting.
The Funzi Keys is a family-run beach lodge located on a small sand spit of Funzi Island, just off the coast of southern Kenya. Surrounded by mangroves and accessed only by boat, it is a remote retreat in a pristine environment.
If you’re looking for a contemporary and modern beach property with a high degree of design, this lodge isn’t for you. But if you’re after some relaxation in an undisturbed environment, away from any other tourists and people then Funzi Keys would suit perfectly. The environment is blissful and the service is friendly and relaxed.
